Youths are selected to participate in various ICT trainning programmes based on their adequate demonstration of a basic knowledge of development issues in Africa & Microsoft Word. At present, we are running a Website Development Workshop for students. These students will be taught how to develop and manage websites effectively. They will be trained in the following applications:
- Macromedia Dream weaver
- Macromedia Fireworks
- Microsoft FrontPage
- Swish max.
Once the Web pages have been built, students will be asked to focus on a development issue that they are concerned about to put on their Web page. Topics could range from air pollution to sexual health, as long as the issue directly affects their lives. The students will be expected to surf the Internet and read newspapers to gather sufficient information on what the government is doing about their specific topic. While doing this, students will assess these government initiatives and take the opportunity to make suggestions of their own that could improve the problem in question. Students will also do some brainstorming on how they can individually make life better for themselves and their peers. The object of this part of the project is to get young Nigerians actively involved in civil society and help them utilize their freedom of expression. The suggestions and information gathered by the participants will constitute the content of their web page.
Participants will be expected to update their Web pages and continue making suggestions after they have left the training program. The UNITeS team will hold conferences to follow-up on UNITeS alumni.
The Web pages of all the students will be linked together on the UNITeS Nigeria Website so that participants can make comments or respond to each others ideas or contributions, thus becoming a Cyber forum or message board for young Nigerians. The website will be linked to the UNITeS International web page so that people around the world can view it. The Web-based forum would also be a useful link and think-tank for the Ministry of Youth Affairs, and other youth foras aound the world.
